Social Care (Self-directed Support) (Scotland) Act 2013
The Social Care Act was put in place to ensure everyone in Scotland who needs social care services or support, has access to self-directed support (SDS), in a way that is right for them.
The act sets out how local authorities should use SDS in a way that supports people’s rights to choice, dignity and respect, whilst helping them to engage in their communities.
The Four Main Options for SDS
- Option 1 – the supported person receives a direct payment to fund their own support
- Option 2 – the supported person decides on the support they want, and support is arranged on their behalf
- Option 3 – after discussion with the supported person, the local authority decides and arranges support
- Option 4 – the supported person uses a mixture of ways to arrange their care and support
Taking the First Steps
In most cases, you can call your local authorities social work department to discuss the support you may need.
With this information they can conclude whether you are eligible for support from the council and arrangements can be made for a detailed assessment of your requirements. This assessment considers you and your families’ preferences and involves understanding the following:
- What manner of support you would like.
- To what degree do your needs impact your life.
- What support you already have.
- Your thoughts on the best way to achieving your outcomes.
